Volume Surge Pro grades every bar’s volume against a fair baseline (by default the same time of day over the last 20 days) into six tiers from Low to Climax, and reads what the volume is doing: churn (heavy volume, little movement), absorption (heavy volume with a long rejected wick), exhaustion (very heavy volume stalling at the end of a move) and volume divergence at confirmed swings. It adds a buying and selling flow reading, a higher-timeframe volume trend and breakout confirmation, all decided on closed bars and all with alerts.

How it works

  1. Baseline. Auto: on intraday charts of 1 minute or more, the average volume of the same time of day (exchange time) over the last 20 days, once at least 5 days are available; otherwise, and on seconds, daily and higher charts, the average of the previous 20 bars.
  2. Relative volume = volume / baseline.
  3. Tiers (defaults): Low at or below 0.5x, Normal, Surge from 1.5x, High from 2.0x, Extreme from 2.5x, Climax from 3.5x.
  4. Step-up markers: when a closed bar’s tier is higher than the previous bar’s and at least Surge: S, H, E or C.
  5. Churn: at least Surge volume and a bar range of at most 0.7 x ATR(14). Marked on the first bar of a run.
  6. Absorption: at least Surge volume, a range of at least 0.5 x ATR, and either a lower wick of at least 0.6 of the range with the close in the upper half (selling absorbed, teal) or an upper wick of at least 0.6 with the close in the lower half (buying absorbed, fuchsia).
  7. Exhaustion: relative volume of at least 2.5x, the close-to-close move over the 5 bars before was up (or down), the bar makes the highest high (or lowest low) of that window, and it stalls: a body of at most 0.3 of its range or a wick against the move of at least 0.5.
  8. Volume divergence: swing highs and lows need 5 bars on each side. The relative volume at a swing is the average of the swing bar and the bar either side. Bearish: a higher swing high with lower relative volume than the previous swing high. Bullish: a lower swing low with lower relative volume than the previous swing low (selling drying up). The two swings must be at most 100 bars apart. A divergence is confirmed 5 bars after the second swing (the right-side bars), and that is where its marker and alert appear.
  9. Flow: each bar’s volume is split into buying (volume x close position in the range) and selling (the rest). Flow = (buying - selling) / total over 20 bars, from -1 to +1. Strong at 0.2 or more either way, Neutral inside 0.05.
  10. Higher-timeframe volume trend: on the higher timeframe, an EMA(20) of volume taken from the last closed higher-timeframe bar. Rising when it is more than 5% above its value 3 higher-timeframe bars earlier, Falling when more than 5% below, otherwise Flat. Auto: 1 hour on charts up to 5 minutes, 4 hours up to 15 minutes, daily up to 1 hour, weekly up to daily, monthly on weekly charts.
  11. Breakout confirmation: a Surge-or-higher bar that closes above the highest high of the previous 20 bars (or below the lowest low); first bar of a run only; a bar opening after a gap of more than 2 bar lengths is skipped by default.
  12. Everything except the live HUD is decided on closed bars.

What you see on the chart

  • Volume columns: teal = buying (close in the upper half of the bar), fuchsia = selling. Intensity grows with the tier: faint for Normal, then Surge, High, Extreme, solid for Climax. Low is faint grey. Exhaustion bars are amber (can be switched off).
  • Cyan line: the baseline.
  • Top of the pane: S, H, E, C step-up markers in the direction colour.
  • On top of a column: X (amber, exhaustion), Ab (absorption, teal for selling absorbed, fuchsia for buying absorbed), Ch (cyan, churn). One per bar, in that order of priority.
  • Bottom of the pane: “Div” markers on the bar where a divergence is confirmed (fuchsia bearish, teal bullish).
  • Price chart: a dotted line joining the two swings of each confirmed divergence (fuchsia bearish, teal bullish; last 20 kept), and small “Vol” triangles under the candle (breakout up, teal) or over it (breakout down, fuchsia). With “Breakout markers” set to Volume pane, they are “B” arrows at the bottom of the pane instead.
  • HUD (top right of the pane): Tier (“Exhaustion”, or the tier with “, churn” or “, absorbing” added), Relative volume (for example “1.85x of 12.3K”, the baseline volume), Baseline (“Time of day, 20 d”; “Simple, 20 bars”; or “Simple 20 (time of day 3/5 d)” while it warms up), Flow, 20 bars (Strong buying, Buying, Neutral, Selling or Strong selling, with the value), Volume trend on the higher timeframe (Rising, Flat or Falling, with the last closed higher-timeframe bar’s volume as a multiple of its average; “off” when the timeframe is not above the chart), Last event and how many bars ago. “no volume data” on symbols without volume. A Note row appears if you choose “Time of day” on a chart where it cannot work.
  • Watermark: “ZynIQ Vol Surge Pro”, bottom right.

Alerts

Create the alert with Once per bar close.

Alert Fires when
ZQ Vol Surge Pro: Surge / High / Extreme / Climax A closed bar steps up into that tier.
ZQ Vol Surge Pro: Any step up Any step up into Surge or above.
ZQ Vol Surge Pro: Churn First bar of a churn run.
ZQ Vol Surge Pro: Absorption An absorption bar (either side).
ZQ Vol Surge Pro: Exhaustion An exhaustion bar.

Set it up for your market

Market Timeframes Profile Key settings Notes
Index futures (MNQ, NQ, MES, ES) 1m to 15m Defaults Baseline Auto (time of day); higher timeframe Auto (1h on 5m) Works on Globex and regular-hours charts. The time-of-day baseline is what makes the tiers fair at the 09:30 open and the 18:00 reopen. Without CME real-time data on TradingView the chart is delayed (usually 10 minutes).
Stocks 1m to 1h, daily Defaults Auto Pre-market bars are compared with earlier pre-market bars when extended hours are shown. Daily charts use the 20-day simple average and a weekly volume trend.
Forex 5m to 1h Defaults Auto; Surge 1.3 if tiers are rare Tick volume (price changes on that broker’s feed), not traded volume; relative readings still work. Feeds without volume show “no volume data”.
Crypto 15m to 4h, daily Defaults Auto 24/7 market, time of day in the exchange’s time zone (UTC on most). One exchange’s volume only. On a 1-hour chart Auto uses the daily volume trend.

How to use it

  • Healthy trend legs show Surge and High tiers in the trend’s colour with few warnings. A move that keeps going on Normal or Low volume is weaker.
  • Churn and absorption near a level say that a lot of business is being done without price getting through. Be careful chasing a breakout straight into them; wait to see which side wins.
  • Exhaustion and a volume divergence together near a swing are a strong warning that the move is tiring: protect profits, do not open in that direction.
  • Use the flow row to see whether recent bars have closed strong or weak, and the higher-timeframe volume trend to judge whether participation is building or fading in the bigger picture.
  • Divergence is a warning, not a reversal trigger, and it appears 5 bars after the swing.
  • Pairs with Session Master, VWAP Master, Volume Profile Master and the breakout tools.

Good to know

  • Markers and alerts appear on bar close; the HUD shows the forming bar live.
  • Divergences are confirmed 5 bars (the “bars to the right” setting) after the second swing. The dotted line on the price chart joins the swings but is only drawn on the confirmation bar.
  • The higher-timeframe trend uses the last closed higher-timeframe bar, so it updates when that bar closes and never changes during it.
  • The time-of-day baseline needs at least 5 earlier days at that time of day; until then the HUD Baseline row shows the days collected (for example “time of day 3/5 d”) and the simple average is used.
  • Each alert needs its feature on: churn, absorption, exhaustion and divergence alerts follow their “Detect” switches, and the breakout alerts need “Breakout markers” set to Price chart or Volume pane. “Paint exhaustion columns amber” only changes the colour.
  • Holidays and half days usually read Low against normal days.
  • On symbols without volume nothing is drawn; the HUD says “no volume data”.
  • Draws in its own pane (the divergence lines and breakout markers go on the price chart) and uses one indicator slot.

Version 3 changes

  • Time-of-day baseline (new, on by default on intraday charts). Each bar can be compared with the same bar of the day over the last 20 days, so the cash open on futures and stocks is no longer a daily false Climax. The simple average stays as an option.
  • A marker on every step up. v2 only labelled a tier when volume came from Normal, so Surge to Extreme or High to Climax had no label. Every step up now has one.
  • Honest divergence. v2 drew divergence markers 5 bars back in time with an offset, which made them look earlier than they could be known live. Now the marker sits on the bar where the divergence is confirmed, the alert fires on that bar, and the optional line joining the two swings is drawn only at that moment. Divergence compares relative volume (so a swing at the open is not compared unfairly with a swing at lunch). The v2 “stopping volume” idea is now covered by absorption.
  • Correct higher-timeframe volume trend. v2 took the higher timeframe’s live volume and ran an average on chart bars, which mixed the two timeframes and changed on the live bar. Now the average is computed on the higher timeframe itself, from its last closed bar only. Auto picks a sensible higher timeframe for your chart and the row switches off with a note when the choice is not above the chart.
  • Clear colours: hue = direction (teal buying, fuchsia selling), strength = tier. v2 coloured Surge teal and High, Extreme and Climax fuchsia whatever the direction, and painted churn orange over everything.
  • Exhaustion and absorption reworked: exhaustion now needs the bar to sit at the extreme of a move; absorption needs the close back in the other half of the bar and a meaningful range (at least half an ATR). Churn uses ATR instead of a fixed 20-bar range average.
  • Breakout confirmation (promised, now built): “Vol” markers when a Surge-or-higher bar closes beyond the previous 20-bar high or low, skipping the bar after a session gap.
  • Alerts (v2 had none) for every tier, churn, absorption, exhaustion, both divergences, both breakouts and strong flow, plus detailed alert() messages.
  • Flow splits each bar’s volume by where it closed in its range, rather than counting whole bars as buying or selling.
  • Symbols without volume now say so; markers and alerts only on closed bars; cyan baseline line visible on light charts; HUD position and size; colour theme; tooltips on every setting.
