Volume Surge Lite is a volume pane that grades every bar’s volume against a fair baseline and sorts it into five states: Low, Normal, Surge, High and Climax. It marks each step up into a busier state, highlights exhaustion (very heavy volume at the end of a move that fails to make progress) and can mark breakouts that happen with surge volume behind them. Everything is decided on closed bars, and every event has an alert.
How it works
- Baseline. With the default “Auto”, intraday charts of 1 minute or more use the time-of-day baseline: for every time of day (in the exchange’s own time zone) the indicator keeps the volume of the last 20 days at that time and averages them. Until a time of day has at least 5 days of history, the simple average is used instead. Seconds, daily and higher charts use the simple average: the mean volume of the previous 20 bars (the current bar is not part of its own baseline).
- Relative volume = this bar’s volume / baseline. 1.0 means a normal amount for this bar.
-
Five states (defaults, all adjustable):
State Relative volume Meaning Low 0.5x or less Quiet, little interest Normal between 0.5x and 1.5x Ordinary participation Surge 1.5x or more Clearly more interest than usual High 2.0x or more Strong participation Climax 3.0x or more Exceptional volume, often near turning points or at the start of big moves -
Step-up markers. When a closed bar’s state is higher than the previous bar’s and at least Surge, a marker is printed: S, H or C. A run of Surge bars only marks the first one; a later step from Surge to High or High to Climax gets its own marker.
- Exhaustion. A closed Climax bar is exhaustion when (a) the close-to-close move over the 5 bars before it was up (or down), (b) the bar makes the highest high (or lowest low) of that window, and (c) it stalls: a body of at most 0.3x its range, or a wick against the move (upper wick in an up move, lower wick in a down move) of at least 0.5x its range.
- Breakout confirmation. A closed bar with at least Surge volume that closes above the highest high of the previous 20 bars (or below the lowest low) gets a “Vol” marker. Only the first bar of a run is marked. On intraday charts a bar that opens after a gap of more than 2 bar lengths (the futures halt, overnight, the weekend) is skipped by default.
- Confirmation. States are shown live in the HUD, but markers and alerts are only produced when the bar closes, so what you see in history is what you would have seen live.
What you see on the chart
- Volume columns. Colour = direction: teal for buying (close in the upper half of the bar), fuchsia for selling (close in the lower half), grey when the close is exactly mid-range and equal to the open (or the bar has no range). Strength = state: Normal columns are faint, Surge clearer, High strong, Climax solid. Low columns are faint grey. Exhaustion columns are amber.
- Cyan line: the baseline volume for each bar. With the time-of-day baseline it rises and falls through the day (high at the open and close, low at lunch).
- Markers at the top of the pane: S (stepped up to Surge), H (High), C (Climax) in the direction colour; amber X for exhaustion.
- Breakout markers: a small teal “Vol” triangle under the candle (breakout up) or fuchsia over it (breakout down) on the price chart, or “B” at the bottom of the pane if you choose that.
- HUD (top right of the pane): State (with colour), Relative volume, Volume / baseline, Baseline in use (“Time of day, 20 d”; “Simple, 20 bars”; or, while the time-of-day baseline warms up, “Simple 20 (time of day 3/5 d)”), Last event (a state, Exhaustion, Breakout up or Breakout down) and how many bars ago. On a symbol without volume it says “no volume data”. If you choose “Time of day” on a chart where it cannot work (seconds, daily or higher), a Note row says so and the simple average is used.
- Watermark: a faint “ZynIQ Vol Surge Lite” tag, bottom right.
Settings
| Group | Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline | Baseline type | Auto | Auto, Time of day or Simple average. Auto uses time of day on intraday charts of 1 minute or more and the simple average on seconds, daily and higher charts. |
| Baseline | Simple average length (bars) | 20 | Bars in the simple average; also used while the time-of-day baseline warms up. |
| Baseline | Time-of-day history (days) | 20 | Days averaged for each time of day (5 to 60; about 60 is the most on 1-minute charts). |
| Volume states (x baseline) | Low: at or below | 0.5 | Relative volume at or below this is Low. |
| Volume states (x baseline) | Surge: from | 1.5 | Relative volume from this is Surge. |

Alerts
Create an alert on the indicator and choose Once per bar close.
| Alert | Fires when |
|---|---|
| ZQ Vol Surge Lite: Surge | A closed bar steps up into Surge. |
| ZQ Vol Surge Lite: High | A closed bar steps up into High. |
| ZQ Vol Surge Lite: Climax | A closed bar steps up into Climax. |
| ZQ Vol Surge Lite: Any step up | Any of the three above. |
| ZQ Vol Surge Lite: Exhaustion | A closed bar is an exhaustion bar. |
| ZQ Vol Surge Lite: Breakout up with volume | A Surge-or-higher bar closes above the 20-bar high (first bar of a run). |
| ZQ Vol Surge Lite: Breakout down with volume | A Surge-or-higher bar closes below the 20-bar low (first bar of a run). |
For one alert that covers every event with the details (state, relative volume, buying or selling bar, close, and for breakouts the level that was broken), choose Any alert() function call in the condition box.
Set it up for your market
| Market | Timeframes | Profile | Key settings | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Index futures (MNQ, NQ, MES, ES) | 1m to 15m | Defaults | Baseline Auto (time of day), 20 days | Works on full Globex charts and on regular-hours charts. The time-of-day baseline stops the 09:30 cash open and the 18:00 reopen being called surges every day. Without CME real-time data on TradingView, futures are delayed (usually 10 minutes), and so are the markers. |
| Stocks | 1m to 1h, daily | Defaults | Auto | With extended hours shown, pre-market bars are compared with earlier pre-market bars, so they are not all Low. On daily charts the 20-day simple average is used. |
| Forex | 5m to 1h | Defaults | Auto; consider Surge 1.3 | Forex volume on TradingView is tick volume (the number of price changes from that broker’s feed), not traded volume. It still shows relative activity well, but it differs between feeds. Some feeds have no volume at all: the HUD then says “no volume data”. |
| Crypto | 5m to 4h, daily | Defaults | Auto | Markets trade 24/7; the time of day is in the exchange’s time zone (UTC for most). Volume is that exchange only, so use a high-volume exchange’s chart. |
How to use it
- Treat it as a yes or no on participation: is this move happening on more volume than usual for this time of day?
- A breakout from a range with a “Vol” marker has real participation behind it. A breakout on Normal or Low volume deserves more scepticism.
- An amber exhaustion bar after a long run is a warning that the move may be running out of fuel: tighten stops or take partial profits rather than chase. It is not a reversal signal on its own.
- Low volume during your usual trading hours often means a range or a slow drift; save your effort for when the states pick up.
- Common mistakes: comparing absolute volume across symbols (relative volume is what matters); reading every Surge as a buy signal (look at the column colour, which tells you whether the close was strong or weak).
- Pairs well with ZynIQ Session Master (when to pay attention), VWAP Master (where value is) and the breakout tools (volume behind the break).
Good to know
- Markers and alerts appear when the bar closes. The HUD shows the live bar’s state while it forms.
- The time-of-day baseline needs history: at least 5 earlier days at the same time of day, ideally 20. On a fresh 1-minute chart with little history the HUD Baseline row shows the days collected so far (for example “time of day 3/5 d”) and the simple average is used. TradingView plans load different amounts of history.
- Holidays and half days are compared with normal days at the same time, so volume on those days often reads Low.
- On symbols without volume nothing is drawn and no alerts fire; the HUD says so.
- The exhaustion alerts need “Highlight exhaustion” on, and the breakout alerts need “Breakout markers” set to Price chart or Volume pane.
- The breakout marker is a volume confirmation, not a trading system: there are no entries, stops or targets here.
- The indicator uses one of your TradingView plan’s indicator slots and draws in its own pane.
Version 3 changes
- Time-of-day baseline (new, on by default on intraday charts). On intraday charts of 1 minute or more, each bar is now compared with the same bar of the day over the last 20 days (the 09:30 bar against earlier 09:30 bars). Before, a plain 20-bar average was used, so every cash open on futures and stocks was called a surge and every lunchtime bar was called low. The simple average is still available.
- A marker on every step up. v2 only marked a bar when volume left Normal, so Low to Surge or Surge to Climax had no marker. Now every step into a higher state (Surge, High, Climax) is marked.
- Exhaustion now means something. In v2 “exhaustion” was just volume of 3x or more. Now it is Climax volume at the extreme of a move with a stalling bar (a small body or a long wick against the move), shown in amber with its own alert.
- Breakout confirmation (promised before, now built). An optional marker when a bar with at least Surge volume also closes beyond the high or low of the previous 20 bars, on the price chart or in the pane. A bar right after a session gap is ignored by default.
- Alerts (v2 had none): Surge, High, Climax, any step up, exhaustion, breakout up, breakout down, plus detailed “Any alert() function call” messages.
- Baseline line is cyan, readable on light and dark charts (it was white, invisible on a light background).
- Symbols without volume (cash indices, some forex and CFD feeds) now show “no volume data” in the HUD instead of a flat pane of zeros.
- Closed bars only: markers and alerts no longer appear and disappear on a live bar.
- Column direction now comes from where the bar closed in its range (upper half = buying), which replaces v2’s wick rule; the candle colour is still an option.
- The script title matches the product (v2 was titled “Volume Surge Master v2”), the docs now describe all five states (they said three), the HUD position and text size can be changed, there is a ZynIQ / Classic colour theme and every setting has a tooltip.
