FVG Master finds fair value gaps (three-candle imbalances) on your chart and, optionally, on a higher timeframe. It then follows each gap through its life: fresh, tapped, partly filled, filled, or inverted into an inverse FVG when a candle closes through it. The HUD shows how many gaps are open and where the nearest bullish and bearish ones are.

How it works

  1. Finding a gap. On every closed candle the indicator looks at the last three candles.
    • Bullish FVG: the low of the third candle is above the high of the first, and the middle candle closes above the first candle’s high. The zone runs from the first candle’s high (bottom) to the third candle’s low (top).
    • Bearish FVG: the high of the third candle is below the low of the first, and the middle candle closes below the first candle’s low. The zone runs from the third candle’s high (bottom) to the first candle’s low (top).
  2. Filters (a gap must pass all that are on):
    • Minimum size: at least 0.10 x ATR(14) tall by default, or a set number of ticks.
    • Displacement (off by default): the middle candle’s body is at least 1.0 x ATR.
    • Volume (off by default): the middle candle’s volume is at least 1.2 x its 20-bar average. Symbols with no volume data pass.
    • Session break (on by default, intraday charts): the three candles must not span a time gap of more than 1.5 bar lengths, so the jump at a futures reopen, a Monday open or a stock’s overnight gap is not mistaken for an imbalance.
  3. The zone is drawn from the middle candle to the right edge of the chart, with a dotted 50% line.
  4. From the next candle on, every closed candle updates each open gap:
    • Tapped: the first time a wick reaches the gap (a bullish gap is tapped when a low reaches its top; a bearish one when a high reaches its bottom). Less than half of the gap has been filled. From the first tap, the part price has reached is shaded grey (or the zone shrinks to what is still open).
    • Partly filled: price has reached the 50% line or deeper.
    • Filled: a wick has reached the far edge. The gap stops, is faded and kept for reference (the last 10 by default).
    • Inverted (on by default): a candle CLOSES beyond the far edge. The gap becomes an inverse FVG: the same zone in the opposite colour with a dashed border (a bullish gap becomes possible resistance, a bearish one possible support). It ends, faded, when a candle closes back through its other edge. If inversion is off, such a gap is simply filled.
  5. Limits. Up to 6 open gaps per side by default (inverse FVGs count towards the side they came from); a new gap over the cap removes the oldest. A gap still open, or an inverse FVG still active, more than 300 bars after it formed (“Maximum age”, 0 = no limit) is removed from the chart without being kept as history.
  6. Higher timeframe (optional). When the chosen timeframe’s third candle has closed, its gap appears on your chart, labelled e.g. “1H FVG”, starting at the middle higher-timeframe candle. It uses only closed higher-timeframe candles, so it never repaints, and its fills are tracked on your chart’s candles. Up to 5 per side.

Everything is decided on closed candles, so nothing appears and then disappears on a live candle.

What you see on the chart

  • Teal boxes: open bullish FVGs. Fuchsia boxes: open bearish FVGs (green and red with the Classic theme).
  • Dotted line inside each open box: its 50% level (consequent encroachment).
  • Grey shading inside a box: the part of the gap price has already filled.
  • Dashed box in the opposite colour, marked “iFVG”: an inverse FVG.
  • Very faint boxes that stop: filled gaps and ended inverse FVGs, kept for reference.
  • Lighter boxes labelled “1H FVG” (or your timeframe): higher-timeframe gaps.
  • HUD (top right by default):
    • FVG Master: the chart timeframe (plus the higher timeframe when on).
    • Open bullish / bearish: number of open gaps of each kind.
    • Nearest bullish: the open bullish gap closest below price (or containing it), with its distance in ATR.
    • Nearest bearish: the open bearish gap closest above price, with its distance in ATR.
    • Inverse FVGs: how many are active.
    • Minimum gap: the current minimum in ATR and in price.
    • Filters: displacement and volume settings in use.
    • Note (amber): “no volume data: volume filter passes”, or “HTF off” when the higher timeframe is not above the chart’s.
  • Watermark: “ZynIQ FVG Master”, bottom right by default.

Alerts

All alerts are decided when a candle closes. Create them from the indicator’s alert menu with Once per bar close.

Alert Fires when
ZQ FVG Master: new bullish FVG A bullish gap (chart or higher timeframe) is confirmed.
ZQ FVG Master: new bearish FVG A bearish gap is confirmed.
ZQ FVG Master: bullish FVG first tap Price touches a bullish gap for the first time.
ZQ FVG Master: bearish FVG first tap Price touches a bearish gap for the first time.
ZQ FVG Master: FVG 50% reached Price reaches the 50% line of any gap.
ZQ FVG Master: FVG filled A gap is fully filled.
ZQ FVG Master: FVG inverted A candle closes through a gap, which becomes an inverse FVG.

For one detailed alert, choose Any alert() function call. You then get one message per candle close, headed with the symbol, timeframe and close, and one line for each gap that changed on that candle with its bottom and top prices: “New …”, “first tap”, “50% reached”, “filled”, “inverted (closed through, now bearish iFVG)”, e.g. “1H bullish FVG 21480.25 - 21492.50: 50% reached”. When one candle takes a gap through several states, its line gives the last one. The end of an inverse FVG (“Inverse bullish FVG … ended (closed back through)”) is only in this message; it has no separate alert.

Market Timeframes Profile Key settings Notes
Index futures (MNQ, NQ, MES, ES) 1m to 15m, 1H for context Defaults Minimum 0.10 ATR; try the displacement filter at 1.0 ATR for fewer, stronger gaps; higher timeframe 1H on a 5m chart Keep “Ignore gaps across a session break” on so the 18:00 New York reopen does not print gaps. On a regular-hours chart the overnight gap is skipped the same way. Without a real-time CME data subscription TradingView shows futures delayed.
Stocks 5m to 1H, daily for swing Defaults Minimum 0.10 to 0.2 ATR; higher timeframe 1H or 4H Opening gaps between days are skipped by default. Extended-hours charts show more (thinner) pre-market gaps; regular hours are cleaner.
Forex 5m to 1H Defaults Minimum 0.10 ATR; volume filter only with care Forex volume on TradingView is tick volume from one feed, so leave the volume filter off unless you know your feed. The weekend gap is skipped.
Crypto 15m to 4H Defaults Minimum 0.10 to 0.2 ATR; higher timeframe 4H on a 1H chart Trades 24/7, so there are no session breaks to skip.

How to use it

  1. Start on a higher timeframe (or switch on higher-timeframe FVGs) to see where the larger imbalances are.
  2. Read them with structure: bullish gaps matter most when structure is bullish, bearish gaps when it is bearish. FVG Master does not judge the trend for you; pair it with Market Structure Master or Trend Master.
  3. Watch the reaction at the gap: a tap and rejection from the 50% line is different from a close straight through it (which turns it into an inverse FVG).
  4. Use the nearest gap in the HUD as a possible target or area of interest, not as an entry signal on its own.

Common mistakes: treating every gap as support or resistance (many get filled and run through); setting the minimum so low that the chart fills with tiny gaps; fading an inverse FVG blindly. Pairs well with Liquidity Master (sweeps into a gap), Market Structure Master and Order Block Master.

Good to know

  • Gaps are confirmed when the third candle closes, so a gap appears one candle after the middle (impulse) candle. Nothing repaints afterwards.
  • Higher-timeframe gaps appear only when the third higher-timeframe candle has closed (e.g. up to an hour after the move on a 1H setting).
  • Fills use wicks; inversion and the end of an inverse FVG use closes.
  • If a single candle taps, reaches 50% and fills a gap, all of those alerts fire on that candle.
  • The 6-per-side cap (and 5 per side for higher-timeframe gaps) and the 300-bar maximum age keep the chart readable, stop gaps far from price squashing the price scale and stay within TradingView’s drawing limits (500 boxes). 300 bars is 5 hours on a 1-minute chart and about 25 hours on a 5-minute chart; raise “Maximum age” or “Open FVGs per side” if you want older gaps. Raising “Filled or ended zones to keep” shows more history.
  • Gaps removed by the maximum age or the cap are deleted, not kept as faded history.
  • Symbols without volume data show “no volume data” in the HUD if the volume filter is on, and the filter passes everything.
  • The higher timeframe uses one of TradingView’s data requests. Your TradingView plan limits how many indicators you can run on one chart.
  • “Ignore gaps across a session break” can also skip a gap on illiquid symbols with missing candles (a time gap of more than 1.5 bars). Switch it off there if needed.

Version 3 changes

  • Fixed: every gap was marked “filled” the moment it appeared. v2 tested the creation candle itself against the gap, so all gaps were faded at once and “Hide fully filled” hid everything. Fills are now checked only from the candle AFTER the gap forms.
  • Fixed: “filled” meant “touched”. v3 tracks how deep price has gone into each gap and has real states: fresh, tapped, partly filled, filled and inverted.
  • Fixed: the minimum gap was 0.08% of price, about 16 points on MNQ and 8 pips on EURUSD, so lower timeframes on futures and forex showed almost nothing. The minimum is now a fraction of ATR (default 0.10) or a number of ticks, so it suits every market.
  • Fixed: the volume filter was on by default, so symbols without volume data (SPX, NDX, DXY, some forex feeds) showed no gaps at all. It is now off by default, and symbols without volume always pass it.
  • Fixed: the box started at the third candle. It now starts at the middle candle, where the imbalance is.
  • Fixed: gap lifetime was tied to the profile (100 bars on a 1-minute chart is under 2 hours). There is now a “Maximum age” setting: 300 bars by default, 0 = keep a gap until it is filled.
  • Fixed: when the cap was reached, new gaps were skipped. Now the OLDEST gap is removed, so you always see the latest ones.
  • Fixed: the HUD said “FVG Pro”. It now says FVG Master, with a watermark to match.
  • New: partly filled gaps shade the filled part grey (or shrink to the open part, your choice).
  • New: inverse FVGs (iFVG): a gap closed through flips to the opposite colour, dashed, and ends when a candle closes back through it.
  • New: at most 6 open gaps per side by default, so months-old gaps far from price no longer squash the price scale.
  • New: 50% line (consequent encroachment) through each open gap.
  • New: displacement filter (middle candle body of at least x ATR), as the docs promised.
  • New: higher-timeframe FVGs that never repaint, switched off automatically if the timeframe is not above the chart’s.
  • New: gaps across a session break (the futures daily halt, weekends, the overnight close on stocks) are ignored by default.
  • New: HUD with open counts, the nearest open bullish and bearish FVG and their distance in ATR.
  • New: alerts for a new FVG, first tap, 50% reached, filled and inverted (v2 had none).
