Volume Profile Master shows how much volume traded at each price, as horizontal rows next to price. It draws one profile per session or trading day (or one profile of a fixed number of bars, or of the bars on screen), marks the point of control (POC, the price with the most volume) and the value area (where 70% of the volume traded), and keeps untested POCs from earlier sessions on the chart until price comes back to them. It can use lower-timeframe bars for precision, falls back to chart bars automatically, and alerts when price enters the value area, crosses the POC or touches a naked POC.

Highlights

  • Session, day, fixed-lookback and visible-range profiles. Auto picks the US cash session (09:30-16:00 New York) for US futures and stocks, the trading day for crypto, forex and other markets, and a 200-bar profile on daily and higher charts.
  • Precise volume placement. By default each chart bar’s volume is taken from its lower-timeframe bars (1-minute bars inside a 5-minute chart, for example) instead of being spread evenly over the whole bar, with an automatic fallback to chart bars where that data is missing.
  • POC and value area with an adjustable value-area percentage (70% by default), drawn as lines and shown in the HUD to the tick.
  • Naked POCs: session and day POCs that price has not traded back to are extended to the right until touched (the 3 most recent are kept by default, so old levels far from price do not squash the price scale), with an alert when one is touched.
  • Up and down volume in each row (teal for rising bars, fuchsia for falling bars), or a single-colour view.
  • Optional developing POC line showing how the POC moved through the session.
  • Stays inside TradingView’s limits: only the last 3 completed profiles (adjustable) are kept, the oldest are deleted first, and the number shown is reduced automatically when many rows would exceed the 500-box limit.
  • No-volume symbols (cash indices such as SPX and NDX, some forex and CFD feeds) draw nothing and the HUD says so.

How it works

  1. Profile type.
    • Session: bars whose open falls inside the session hours (default 09:30-16:00 New York) form one profile per session. Overnight sessions such as 18:00-04:00 work.
    • Day (exchange): one profile per trading day of the symbol (for CME futures the Globex day starting 18:00 New York; for crypto the UTC day on most exchanges; for forex usually 17:00 New York).
    • Fixed lookback: one profile of the last 200 bars, drawn to the right of the last bar.
    • Visible range: one profile of the bars currently on screen, drawn over the right-hand end of the visible bars (its rows end at the last visible bar and grow to the left, so it stays on screen when you scroll back). It recalculates when you scroll or zoom.
    • Auto (default): Session for US futures, US stocks, US funds and depositary receipts on intraday charts; Day for other intraday markets; Fixed lookback on daily and higher charts. Session and Day profiles need an intraday chart; if you pick them on a daily chart the indicator uses Fixed lookback and says so in the HUD.
  2. Volume data. “Lower timeframe” (default) asks TradingView for the smaller bars inside each chart bar: 1 minute on charts up to 15 minutes, 5 minutes up to 1 hour, 15 minutes up to 4 hours, 1 hour on daily charts, 4 hours above. Up to 20,000 of these smaller bars are loaded (about two weeks of 1-minute data on a market that trades nearly 24 hours, more on a regular-hours chart); where they are not available (older history, some symbols or plans) the chart bar is used, automatically, and the HUD shows which data the current profile uses. “Chart bars” uses the chart bars only.
  3. Rows. The profile’s high-to-low range is cut into 30 rows. Each bar (or smaller bar) adds its volume to the rows its high-low range covers, in proportion to the overlap. A bar’s volume counts as up volume if it closed above its open, down volume if below, half and half if unchanged.
  4. POC: the row with the most volume; its price is the middle of that row, rounded to the tick.
  5. Value area: starting from the POC row, the larger of the next row above and the next row below is added, one row at a time, until 70% of the profile’s volume is inside. VAH is the top of the highest value-area row, VAL the bottom of the lowest, both rounded to the tick.
  6. Completed and forming profiles. A session or day profile is frozen when the first bar after it arrives. The profile still forming is redrawn on the last bar, including the live bar.
  7. Naked POCs. Each completed session’s POC is extended to the right as a dashed line. On the first closed bar whose high-low range includes that price, the line stops at that bar and fades. Only the 3 most recent naked POCs are tracked by default (“Naked POCs to keep”, 1 to 30); when a new one is added beyond that, the oldest is deleted.
  8. Developing POC (optional): the POC of the forming session as of each bar close, for the most recent 3000 bars.
  9. Alerts. For Session and Day profiles the alerts use the previous completed profile’s POC and value area, so the levels do not move while you trade against them. For Fixed lookback and Visible range they use the current profile (live bars only, since that profile changes every bar).

What you see on the chart

  • Rows: horizontal bars. In Session and Day modes each profile starts at its session’s first bar and its widest row is 35% of the session’s length; in Fixed lookback mode the profile sits to the right of the last bar, and in Visible range mode its rows end at the last visible bar and grow to the left; both are 40 bars wide at the widest row. Teal part = up volume, fuchsia part = down volume. Rows inside the value area are stronger, rows outside fainter, the POC row strongest. With the split switched off: cyan inside the value area, grey outside, amber at the POC.
  • Amber line: the POC across the profile.
  • Dotted cyan lines: VAH and VAL across the profile. For Fixed lookback and Visible range these lines run from the first bar of the profile to its right-hand end.
  • Labels next to the most recent profile: “POC”, “VAH” and “VAL” with their prices.
  • Dashed amber lines extending right: naked POCs, each labelled “nPOC” with its price at the right edge. When touched, the line stops at the touching bar and fades (the last 10 touched lines stay).
  • Optional amber step line: the developing POC.
  • HUD (top right): Profile (“Session 09:30-16:00”, “Day (exchange)”, “Last 200 bars” or “Visible range”, with “(auto)” when Auto chose it), Data used (for example “1m bars”, “chart bars (no 1m data)” or “1m + chart bars”), POC (forming or last), VAH / VAL, and for Session and Day profiles the Previous POC and whether price is above, inside or below the previous value area (or the number of naked POCs when no session is forming). A Note row (“session profiles need an intraday chart”) explains a switched profile type. On a symbol without volume: “no volume data” and “nothing to profile on this symbol”.
  • Watermark: “ZynIQ Vol Profile”, bottom right.

Alerts

Create the alert with Once per bar close.

Alert Fires when
ZQ Vol Profile: Price enters value area The close moves from outside the (previous) value area to inside it.
ZQ Vol Profile: Price crosses POC The close crosses the (previous) profile’s POC.
ZQ Vol Profile: Naked POC touched A closed bar trades through a naked POC.

Any alert() function call sends the details: the value area’s VAL and VAH, the POC, the touched naked POC price and the close, all to the tick. The first two alerts skip a bar that opens after a session gap by default, and for Session and Day profiles they also skip the first bar after a profile completes (the bar that starts the next one).

Market Timeframes Profile Key settings Notes
Index futures (MNQ, NQ, MES, ES) 1m to 15m Auto (Session 09:30-16:00 New York) Day (exchange) for a full Globex profile; Rows 30 to 40 The cash-session profile is the standard reference. With “Lower timeframe” the profile uses 1-minute data for roughly the last two weeks. Without CME real-time data on TradingView the chart is delayed (usually 10 minutes).
Stocks 1m to 1h; daily Auto (Session; Fixed lookback 200 on daily) Extended hours: the Session profile ignores pre- and post-market; Day includes them On daily charts the 200-bar profile uses hourly data where available, which shows the main volume shelves of roughly the last 200 trading days.
Forex 5m to 1h Auto (Day) Or Session with London hours (Europe/London 0800-1630) Forex volume on TradingView is tick volume from that broker’s feed; the shape is still meaningful but differs between feeds. Feeds without volume draw nothing.
Crypto 15m to 4h Auto (Day, UTC) Visible range for a quick look at a chosen stretch 24/7 markets; volume is that exchange only, so use a high-volume exchange.

How to use it

  • The value area is where the market agreed on price. Opening outside the previous value area and failing to get back in can lead to a trend day; getting back in can lead to a move across the value area to the other side.
  • The POC is a magnet in quiet markets and a pivot in busy ones: watch how price behaves on the first test.
  • Naked POCs from earlier sessions are levels price has not traded back to. Many traders watch them as possible targets or reaction areas; they are not guarantees. Raise “Naked POCs to keep” if you want older ones on the chart.
  • Thin rows (low-volume areas) are where price tends to move quickly; thick rows are where it tends to slow down.
  • Common mistakes: reading a profile built from very few bars (the first minutes of a session); comparing profiles built from chart bars with ones built from 1-minute data (check the Data row); forgetting that forex volume is tick volume.
  • Pairs with VWAP Master (fair value by time), Session Master and Volume Surge (is the move away from value backed by volume?).

Good to know

  • Profiles, POCs and naked POCs are decided on closed bars; the forming profile updates with the live bar.
  • A session or day profile is frozen when the next bar after it arrives (on a live chart, at the first tick of that bar).
  • The alerts for Session and Day profiles use the previous completed profile; they do not fire until one session has completed.
  • Fixed lookback and Visible range alerts only work on live bars, because those profiles are recalculated on the latest bar. The Visible range profile changes when you scroll, which also restarts the indicator.
  • Lower-timeframe data is limited by TradingView (and by your plan) and to the latest 20,000 smaller bars here; older sessions then use chart bars. Seconds charts always use chart bars.
  • TradingView allows at most 500 boxes per indicator; with the default 30 rows split into up and down volume, up to 6 completed sessions plus the forming one fit. More rows reduce the number automatically.
  • Bars are assigned to a session by their opening time: on charts whose bars do not start at the session open (1-hour futures bars, for example) the session profile starts with the first bar that opens inside the hours.
  • No-volume symbols draw nothing and say so in the HUD.
  • Uses one indicator slot on the price chart.
