Momentum Master scores three momentum readings (RSI, the recent move and the EMA slope) on every bar and turns the total into one clear state: Strong Bull, Bull, Neutral, Bear or Strong Bear, with a “Building” read when momentum starts to gather from Neutral. It also finds regular RSI divergences at confirmed swing highs and lows. Every move is measured in ATRs, so the same settings work on index futures, stocks, forex and crypto.

How it works

  1. Profile. Scalping: RSI 7, move over 5 bars, EMAs 9/21. Intraday (default): RSI 14, move over 9 bars, EMAs 13/34. Swing: RSI 21, move over 14 bars, EMAs 21/55. Custom sets all four. ATR length 14.
  2. RSI score. 70 or more: +2. 60 to 70: +1. 30 or less: -2. 30 to 40: -1. Otherwise 0.
  3. Move score. The close minus the close N bars ago, divided by ATR and by the square root of N (so short and long move lengths are comparable). 1.0 or more: +2. 0.5 or more: +1. The same downwards. “Move sensitivity” multiplies these thresholds. On the Intraday profile that is roughly 1.5 ATR over 9 bars for +1 and 3 ATR for +2.
  4. Slope score. The fast EMA’s change over 3 bars, in ATRs. At least +0.25 with the fast EMA above the slow EMA: +1.5. At most -0.25 with the fast EMA below: -1.5.
  5. Score and state. The three add up to between -5.5 and +5.5. Strong Bull at 3.5 or more, Bull at 1.5 or more, Bear at -1.5 or less, Strong Bear at -3.5 or less, otherwise Neutral. If you switch a component off, the thresholds shrink in proportion to the maximum score that is left.
  6. Confirmation. The state shown changes only when a new state has held for 2 closed bars in a row.
  7. Building. While the shown state is Neutral: Building bull when the score is at least +0.5 and has risen by 1 or more over 3 bars, or the raw reading is already Bull or Strong Bull and waiting for confirmation. Building bear is the mirror. (These two numbers shrink in proportion too when a component is off.) The HUD shows Building and the Building alerts fire whether or not the dots are shown.
  8. Divergence. A swing low is a low with 5 higher lows to its left and 3 to its right (confirmed 3 bars later). When a new swing low is lower than the previous swing low, between 5 and 60 bars apart, and RSI at the new swing is higher than RSI at the previous one (and under 50 with the filter on), it is a bullish divergence. Bearish uses swing highs, the mirror rule and RSI over 50.

What you see on the chart

  • Small triangle: momentum turned Bull (teal, below the bar) or Bear (fuchsia, above the bar).
  • Larger triangle (no text): momentum reached Strong Bull (below the bar) or Strong Bear (above the bar), either straight from another state or as an upgrade. An easing from Strong back to Bull or Bear draws no marker (the “any state change” alert still fires).
  • Grey cross: momentum cooled back to Neutral (over the bar from Bull, under it from Bear).
  • Faint dot (off by default, “Show Building cues”): momentum started building from Neutral (teal below the bar, fuchsia above it).
  • Divergence line and label: a line joining the two swing lows (bullish, teal, “Bull div”) or highs (bearish, fuchsia, “Bear div”), drawn at the swings. The label appears 3 bars after the second swing, when it is confirmed.
  • Candle colours (off by default): full colour for Strong, lighter for Bull or Bear, grey for Neutral.
  • Background tint (off by default): faint colour while Strong.
  • HUD (top right by default):
    • Momentum: the state on a cell in its colour (Building bull or Building bear in a lighter colour).
    • Score: the total out of the maximum, plus any state waiting for confirmation.
    • RSI: the current value, teal at 60 or more and fuchsia at 40 or less.
    • Move: the move over the move length, in ATRs.
    • EMA slope: the fast EMA’s 3-bar change, in ATRs.
    • Divergence: the last one and how many bars ago it was confirmed.
    • Last state change: how many bars ago.
  • Watermark: “ZynIQ Momentum”, faint, bottom right.

Set it up for your market

Market Timeframes Profile Key settings Notes
Index futures (MNQ, NQ, MES, ES) 1 to 15 minutes Scalping on 1 to 3 minutes, Intraday on 5 to 15 Defaults The open after the overnight halt (or 09:30 on regular-hours charts) is a big bar that can jump the score; give it a bar to settle. CME data on TradingView is delayed without a real-time subscription.
Stocks 5 minutes to daily Intraday, Swing on 1 hour and daily Defaults Regular-hours and extended-hours charts give different RSI and EMA values; read the one you trade.
Forex 5 minutes to 4 hours Intraday Defaults No volume is used, so tick-volume feeds make no difference.
Crypto 5 minutes to daily Intraday or Swing Move sensitivity 1.25 if states flip too often 24/7 market, no session gaps.

How to use it

  • Use it as a filter, not a trigger: take breakouts or pullbacks from your other tools in the direction the state agrees with, and be wary when it disagrees.
  • Be careful with new longs while momentum is Bear or Strong Bear, and with new shorts while it is Bull or Strong Bull.
  • A cooling cross after a strong run is a warning that the push is fading, not a reversal signal on its own.
  • Treat divergences as context: a bullish divergence into support, or a bearish one into resistance, is worth a closer look; in a strong trend divergences can repeat several times before anything turns.
  • Common mistakes: lowering “Bars to confirm” to 1 on fast charts (more flips), and reading a divergence label as if it appeared at the swing (it appears 3 bars later).
  • Pairs well with ZynIQ Pullback Zones Lite (momentum turning back your way at the zone) and the ZynIQ breakout tools.

Good to know

  • States and markers change only when a bar closes. On history every bar is closed, so history matches what you would have seen live.
  • Divergences are confirmed 3 bars (Swing right bars) after the swing. The line is drawn back at the swings, but the label, the alert and the HUD only appear at confirmation.
  • The state shown lags the raw score by “Bars to confirm” minus 1 bars (1 bar by default). The HUD shows a pending state as soon as it appears.
  • No volume is used, so it works on cash indices and forex.
  • 20 divergences are kept by default (up to 50 with the setting); older ones are deleted oldest first.
  • Free TradingView plans limit how many indicators you can add to a chart.

Version 3 changes

  • Strength upgrades now show. In v2 a Bull state could never become Strong Bull (or Bear become Strong Bear) without first going through Neutral. v3 tracks every change, so an upgrade prints a larger triangle and fires an alert.
  • HUD text and colour always agree. v2 printed the text from one state and the colour from another, so they could disagree. v3 takes both from the same state.
  • Real RSI divergence. v2’s “Div” marker was not a divergence (it fired on any new 5-bar low while RSI was low). v3 compares confirmed swing lows and highs with RSI at those swings: a lower price low with a higher RSI low is a bullish divergence, a higher price high with a lower RSI high a bearish one. It is confirmed 3 bars after the swing (adjustable) and drawn as a line between the two swings.
  • Works on every market. The EMA slope used a fixed 0.05% of price, which meant different things on MNQ, EURUSD and BTC. v3 measures the slope and the move in ATRs.
  • No divide-by-zero. ATR is floored at one tick, so a flat market can’t break the maths.
  • “Building” is real. The docs mentioned a Building state that did not exist. v3 shows Building bull or Building bear while the state is Neutral but the score is rising towards a side (or the raw reading has already turned Bull or Bear), with an optional small dot when it starts (off by default).
  • Steadier states. A new state must hold for 2 closed bars (adjustable) before it is shown, replacing v2’s cool-down that dropped changes.
  • Cooling cue. A grey cross marks momentum cooling from Bull or Bear back to Neutral.
  • Alerts for everything. Ten alerts (turned Bull or Bear, Strong, cooled, building, both divergences, any change), with ticker and price; the detailed messages give the old and new state, score and RSI.
  • Signals are decided on closed bars only, Custom profile, tooltips on every setting, candle colouring and a movable HUD and watermark that read on dark and light charts.
