Fair value gap indicator TradingView: what to verify
A fair value gap indicator on TradingView marks three-candle imbalances so you do not have to count wicks on every bar. That is a drawing tool, not a reason to enter a trade. Before you pay, you should be able to state the gap rule, the fill rule, and whether the box locks when the third candle closes.
If you want the Pine v6 source as a one-time download, rather than an invite-only script that disappears when a subscription ends, start on the ZynIQ indicators page. Each indicator is sold on its own. You pay once in US dollars, download the source, and run it on any TradingView plan, including the free one.
What a fair value gap is
A fair value gap (FVG) is a stretch of price that one candle skipped. The usual chart definition uses three candles:
- Bullish FVG: the high of candle 1 sits below the low of candle 3, so candle 2 left untraded price above that high.
- Bearish FVG: the low of candle 1 sits above the high of candle 3, so candle 2 left untraded price below that low.
Some scripts add a minimum size in ticks, points or ATR so tiny wicks do not print a box. Some ignore the first bar after a session gap. Those extras are choices, not laws. If the script does not write the rule down, you cannot test it.
Price often trades back into the gap later. Traders call that a fill or a mitigation. A touch of the edge, a move to the midpoint, and a full traverse are three different events. An indicator that stamps “filled” without saying which event it used is not something you can test honestly.
A gap is context on the chart. It is not a signal to follow. Trading is risky and you can lose money.
What to look for in a TradingView fair value gap indicator
Apply this list to every script, free or paid.
- A definition you can read. How candles 1, 2 and 3 are chosen, whether wicks or bodies count, and the minimum size. If you cannot restate the rule in one sentence, move on.
- Closed-candle logic. The box should appear only when candle 3 has closed. If it grows, shrinks or vanishes on the forming bar, you cannot trust a replay.
- A fill rule. Touch, midpoint or full fill should be a setting or a documented default. Partial fills should stay visible or be labelled, not deleted in silence.
- How many gaps stay on the pane. A cap, an age limit in bars, or a hide-when-filled switch keeps structure readable.
- Timeframe behaviour. If daily boxes appear on a five-minute chart, the docs should say whether those boxes lock on the daily close.
- Alerts on close. Formation and fill as separate named events, firing once per bar close.
- Source you can keep. A
.pinefile you paste into the Pine Editor stays on your account. Invite-only access can be withdrawn. Custom Pine still runs on the free TradingView plan; the plan only caps how many indicators sit on one chart.
Checklist before you trust the boxes
| Check | Why it matters | Pass looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Gap rule written down | You cannot test a hidden formula | Three-candle imbalance, wick or body stated |
| Locks at candle close | Live wicks lie | Box appears on bar 3 close and does not move |
| Fill definition | “Filled” is otherwise empty | Touch, midpoint or full fill, named in settings |
| Box budget | Clutter hides structure | Max count, max age, or hide-when-filled |
| Alert on close | Intra-bar alerts fire then reverse | Once per bar close, named events |
| Source and payment | Access can disappear | Pine v6 file, one payment, no invite list |
| Docs for every input | Defaults get left untouched | Each input has a unit: ATR, ticks or bars |
Two scripts on the same symbol will often draw different boxes. That is two definitions, not a bug in the market. Pick one definition and keep it while you test.
How to test a fair value gap TradingView script
Do this in bar replay, not on a live forming candle.
- Choose one symbol you already chart and one timeframe you actually use.
- Mark three recent gaps by eye with the three-candle rule. Write the times down.
- Add the indicator. Those three boxes should match your notes on the close of candle 3. If a box appeared earlier, or shifted after the close, the script is not locking.
- Watch a later bar trade into each box. Note whether the script marks a fill on first touch, at the midpoint, or only after a full traverse.
- Scroll to a Monday open, a New York cash open, and, for CME products, the Sunday evening reopen. A session hole is not an FVG unless the docs say it is.
- Cash indices such as SPX have no volume. If the script needs volume to draw a gap, it will go quiet there.
- Create one alert on bar close. After you change a setting, create the alert again. Old alerts keep old settings.
None of those steps produce a performance figure. They only tell you whether the drawing matches the rule. That is the only honest check.
Source, payment and what you own
Community scripts vary. Some are clear. Many hide the fill logic, move boxes on the forming bar, or vanish when the author unpublishes them. Subscription models usually keep the script invite-only: when you stop paying, the indicator leaves your chart.
A one-time purchase of the Pine v6 source is a different arrangement. You download a .pine file, paste it into TradingView’s Pine Editor, add it to the chart and save it. It runs on every plan, including free. There is no invite list and no TradingView username to hand over. Values that lock at candle close can be stepped through bar by bar.
ZynIQ’s Pro tools include FVG Master, sold on its own for $59, one payment. It is Pine Script v6 source, and it decides its plots and alerts on closed candles. The same list has related structure tools (Market Structure Master and Liquidity Master) if you already map breaks of structure or liquidity pools by hand. Buy a single indicator if you only need the gap boxes. Guides for every tool are at the ZynIQ docs.
What to skip
Walk past any script that calls the boxes a signal service, shows forming-bar gaps that later disappear, has no fill setting and no documentation, charges a monthly fee for access you lose when you cancel, or asks for an invite list before you can read the logic.
A fair value gap is not an instruction to enter. Size, a stop and a market you understand still sit with you. ZynIQ does not give trading advice or run a signals service.
Add it, then verify it
If you want a TradingView fair value gap indicator you keep, open FVG Master on the ZynIQ list, pay once and download the source. Put it on replay first. Confirm the boxes match the three-candle rule you wrote down. Only then decide whether it earns a slot next to your structure or session tools.
Trading is risky. No indicator can guarantee results. Read the gap, read the fill, and keep the code.
Questions people ask
What is a fair value gap on a TradingView chart?
A fair value gap is a three-candle imbalance. On a bullish gap the high of candle 1 sits below the low of candle 3. On a bearish gap the low of candle 1 sits above the high of candle 3. The skipped stretch is the gap. It is chart context, not a trade instruction. Trading is risky.
Do fair value gap indicators repaint?
They can. If the box appears, moves or vanishes while candle 3 is still forming, the script is not locking. Prefer tools that decide plots and alerts on the closed candle so a replay matches what you saw.
Can I use a fair value gap indicator on the free TradingView plan?
Yes, if it is ordinary Pine you add yourself. TradingView's free plan limits how many indicators fit on one chart, not whether custom Pine can run. Invite-only vendor scripts are a separate access problem.
Is a fair value gap a buy or sell signal?
No. A gap is a labelled imbalance. A fill is price trading back into that imbalance. Neither is a recommendation to buy or sell. No indicator can guarantee results, and you can lose money.
What do I get if I buy FVG Master from ZynIQ?
The Pine v6 source as a .pine file, licensed to you, which you paste into TradingView's Pine Editor. It is a one-time payment. The download page opens after payment and the same link is emailed. The download link works for 30 days ([FAQ](https://zyniq.io/faq)); fresh links can be requested at /download/resend with the purchase email address. Save the .pine file once downloaded, since it is yours to keep. ZynIQ does not give trading advice.
