What Time Does New York Session Open Across Markets

ZynIQ guide · updated September 2026

The New York cash equity session opens at 09:30 America/New_York. The forex and most futures “New York session” window that traders mark on charts starts earlier, at 08:00 America/New_York, and runs to 17:00. Convert those local clocks to UTC yourself: 13:00 - 22:00 UTC in US standard time, 12:00 - 21:00 UTC in US daylight time.

Clock first: two different “opens”

Retail charts mix three clocks. Equity cash (NYSE, Nasdaq) uses a 09:30 - 16:00 America/New_York cash session, with a pre-market print from 04:00 and after-hours to 20:00. Interbank FX and most session indicators treat New York as 08:00 - 17:00 America/New_York. CME equity-index futures print nearly around the clock on Globex; the RTH cash-aligned window is still 09:30 - 16:00 America/New_York. Crypto never closes. When you mark a New York session on BTC or ETH, you are overlaying the same 08:00 - 17:00 America/New_York liquidity window used in FX, not an exchange open.

If your question is simply what time New York session open, answer it with the product you trade. Equities: 09:30 local. FX, metals, and most session boxes: 08:00 local. Always pin the chart timezone to America/New_York or convert from UTC; do not leave the chart on exchange time and guess.

UTC conversion and daylight saving

America/New_York is UTC−5 from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March (EST). It is UTC−4 from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November (EDT). The open therefore jumps by one UTC hour twice a year. The local wall clock does not jump: 08:00 and 09:30 stay 08:00 and 09:30 in New York.

US DST does not match UK DST on every calendar edge. For a few weeks each year London and New York can sit four hours apart instead of five, which shifts the overlap by one hour in UTC. Check both city clocks in the week of the change; do not hard-code a UTC open for a whole season without a DST flag.

Set this on TradingView in six steps

  1. Open the chart timezone menu (clock icon, lower right of the chart).
  2. Set timezone to America/New_York if you want the axis to read 08:00 and 09:30 as locals. Alternatively keep UTC and draw the levels from the table above.
  3. Add a session or time-range tool. For FX-style boxes use 0800-1700. For cash equities use 0930-1600.
  4. Turn on extended hours only if you actually trade pre-market or Globex; otherwise the 04:00 print will look like an “open” that cash never had.
  5. On a 1-minute or 5-minute chart, confirm the first bar of the box matches the first print you intend to trade. A one-bar offset usually means the timezone is wrong, not the indicator.
  6. Re-check the box on the Sunday after each US DST switch. If the UTC labels moved and the local labels did not, the tool is correct.

What actually changes at the open

Volume and spread behaviour differ by product. In G10 FX, the London - New York overlap (08:00 - 12:00 New York, roughly) is the densest two-way flow of the day. Spreads on EURUSD and GBPUSD often sit in the 0.1 - 0.4 pip institutional range on liquid venues; they can widen outside that window, especially into the New York afternoon. That is a cost fact, not a signal.

US cash equities gap to the 09:30 print against the overnight futures lead. Typical opening auction duration is a few seconds; the first 1 - 5 minutes often carry the day’s highest one-minute volume. Opening range definitions traders actually use are 5, 15 or 30 minutes from 09:30, not from 08:00. Mixing an 08:00 FX box with a 09:30 ORB on the same ES or SPY chart is a common error.

Index futures (ES, NQ) have a cash open at 09:30 America/New_York but trade almost 23 hours. Overnight ranges from 18:00 previous day (the Globex “day” many desks use) to 09:29 are not the New York session. If you mark 08:00 on ES you are copying the FX convention, which can be useful for USD flow, but it is not the RTH open.

Crypto follows neither exchange calendar. BTCUSD on a 24-hour venue has no open. The reason traders still draw 08:00 - 17:00 New York is clustering: US hours still dominate dollar stablecoin flow and equity-correlated spikes. Treat that box as a liquidity filter, not a venue rule.

Overlap, close, and what not to assume

London FX hours are commonly marked 08:00 - 16:00 or 08:00 - 17:00 Europe/London. With a five-hour offset, New York 08:00 is London 13:00. The shared window is about four hours. Tokyo (often 09:00 - 18:00 Asia/Tokyo) has usually wound down before New York 08:00. Do not expect Tokyo-style range behaviour to persist into the New York open.

US equity close is 16:00 America/New_York. MOC imbalance prints hit the tape in the last minutes. FX “New York close” at 17:00 is a session convention, not a matching-engine halt. Daily FX candles on many brokers roll at 17:00 New York; that roll is why a “daily open” and a “New York session open” are different lines. If your daily candle opens at 00:00 UTC, it is not aligned with the 17:00 New York day.

Public holidays move the cash open. US equity markets close for scheduled holidays; FX stays open with thinner books. A 09:30 box on a US holiday will sit on empty cash while ES and FX still print. Check the exchange calendar before treating a session high as valid structure.

Using session tools without turning them into a system

A session overlay is decision support: it tells you which prints belong to which clock. It does not forecast direction. Pair it with structure, VWAP, or volume only after the timezone is verified. Non-repainting Pine Script v6 session boxes should freeze once the bar is closed; if yesterday’s box still crawls, the script is using a live clock incorrectly.

ZynIQ lists session tools among its one-time-purchase TradingView indicators for stocks, forex, crypto and futures, with instant source download after checkout and no subscription. Whatever vendor you use, test three things on a replay: the 08:00 FX box, the 09:30 cash box, and the UTC labels on both sides of a DST weekend. Trading involves risk of loss. Indicators do not remove that risk.

Quick checks before the next open

  • Product: cash equity 09:30, FX-style session 08:00, both America/New_York.
  • UTC: add 5 hours in EST, 4 hours in EDT.
  • Chart timezone matches the box, or you converted deliberately.
  • Extended hours off unless you trade them.
  • Holiday calendar checked for cash products.
  • Daily candle roll (17:00 New York vs 00:00 UTC) not confused with session open.

If those six hold, you already know what time the New York session opens for the market on the screen. Everything else is interpretation, and interpretation is not a return.

Frequently asked questions

Is the New York session open 08:00 or 09:30?

Both, depending on product. Mark 08:00 - 17:00 America/New_York for the FX-style session used on most currency, metal and crypto overlays. Mark 09:30 - 16:00 America/New_York for NYSE and Nasdaq cash. Do not mix the two on the same range definition.

What time is the New York open in UTC?

FX-style 08:00 New York is 13:00 UTC under EST (UTC−5) and 12:00 UTC under EDT (UTC−4). Equity cash 09:30 is 14:30 UTC in winter and 13:30 UTC in summer. Recheck after each US DST change.

Does crypto have a New York session open?

No exchange open. Spot crypto trades continuously. Traders still draw 08:00 - 17:00 America/New_York as a liquidity window because US hours often dominate dollar flow. That is a filter, not a matching-engine event.

When does the London and New York overlap start?

At New York 08:00, which is 13:00 in London when the offset is five hours. The shared FX window usually runs until London’s close around 12:00 New York. For a few weeks around DST changes the offset can be four hours, so confirm both city clocks.

Should my TradingView chart use New York time or UTC?

Either works if you are consistent. America/New_York makes 08:00 and 09:30 read as locals. UTC forces you to apply +4 or +5 by season. Errors almost always come from a chart timezone that does not match the session box.

Do indicators change the open time?

No. The open is an exchange or convention clock. A session indicator only draws it. Use it as analysis. It does not predict price, and trading involves risk of loss.
