London Session Trading: Hours, Overlaps and Checks

ZynIQ guide · updated October 2026

The London session is the window when UK cash markets are open, typically 08:00 to 16:30 London time. It is the largest FX centre by turnover and overlaps Tokyo in the morning and New York in the afternoon. Session markers are analysis tools only; trading involves risk of loss.

What the London session is

In cash equities and listed derivatives, London hours follow the London Stock Exchange: 08:00 to 16:30 local time, Monday to Friday, excluding UK bank holidays. In FX, crypto and futures the market never closes, so traders treat the London session as the high-activity block when European banks, funds and corporates are at their desks. That block is commonly marked 08:00 to 16:00 or 08:00 to 17:00 London time. GBP, EUR, CHF and related crosses, plus London-listed index futures and many commodity contracts, tend to print their largest ranges and tightest spreads in this window.

London accounts for roughly 38 percent of global FX turnover in the latest BIS survey. That share is why many retail charts treat London as the primary European session rather than a generic “Europe” label. Volume is not uniform: the first 60 to 90 minutes after 08:00 often see the open auction, UK data releases and the unwind of Asia positions. The last 90 minutes overlap New York and frequently hold the day’s remaining range.

Hours in UTC, London, New York and Tokyo

London uses GMT in winter and BST (UTC+1) from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. Always set your chart timezone to the exchange or to UTC and convert, rather than trusting a broker’s default. The table uses the common FX peak of 08:00 - 16:00 London time.

ReferenceWinter (GMT)Summer (BST)
London local08:00 - 16:0008:00 - 16:00
UTC08:00 - 16:0007:00 - 15:00
New York (EST/EDT)03:00 - 11:00 EST03:00 - 11:00 EDT
Tokyo17:00 - 01:00 JST16:00 - 00:00 JST

Equities close 30 minutes later (16:30 London). Futures on the same underlyings often keep a short cash close then continue on Globex or equivalent. Crypto follows the same human-flow peaks even though the tape is 24 hours.

Overlaps that actually change the tape

Two overlaps matter more than the rest of the calendar.

  • Tokyo - London (roughly 08:00 - 09:00 London in winter, shorter in summer): Asia books hand off to Europe. GBPJPY, EURJPY and gold often show the first directional push of the European day. Spreads can still be wider than mid-London.
  • London - New York (13:00 - 16:00 London / 08:00 - 11:00 New York): This is the highest-liquidity block in FX. EURUSD, GBPUSD and index futures frequently print the session high or low here. US data at 13:30 London (08:30 New York) sits inside this window.

Outside those two blocks, London can still trend, but average true range and tick volume typically drop after 16:00 London once New York lunch and the European close coincide.

What to mark on the chart

Treat the session as a time box, not a signal. Concrete marks that stay useful:

  1. Session open and close verticals in London time, with a DST-aware offset so summer does not shift the box by an hour on the UTC axis.
  2. London session high and low. Many structure and liquidity reads use these as the first reference once New York opens.
  3. The 08:00 - 09:00 opening range. A break of that range later in the session is a fact on the chart; it is not a trade instruction.
  4. UK and euro-area data times (CPI, GDP, BoE, retail sales) plotted as markers. A release inside the first hour often resets the opening range.
  5. Previous day’s London high/low and the overnight Asia range, so you can see whether London is continuing or fading the hand-off.

Non-repainting session overlays in Pine Script v6 keep those boxes fixed once the bar closes. ZynIQ session tools sit in that category among breakout, structure, FVG and VWAP studies; they are one-time purchases with instant source download after checkout and run on any TradingView plan including free.

Pairs, products and typical behaviour

Highest London participation: EURUSD, GBPUSD, EURGBP, GBPJPY, XAUUSD, UK100 and GER40 futures, and sterling crosses. Lower but still elevated: USDCHF, EURJPY. USDJPY often waits for the New York overlap. Crypto majors (BTC, ETH) show a volume bump at the London open on most weekdays, then a second bump at New York.

Typical range contribution (order of magnitude, not a forecast): London often delivers 40 - 60 percent of a full 24-hour FX range on G10 pairs when both overlaps are active. Quiet UK holidays (late December, August bank holiday) cut that share sharply. Always check the economic calendar for that specific day rather than assuming a “normal” London range.

Practical checks before you size a London idea

Work through this list on the chart, not in a chat window.

  • Confirm your platform timezone equals the session you drew. A one-hour DST error places the New York overlap on the wrong bars.
  • Note whether today is a UK bank holiday or a half-day. Cash equities will be shut or early-close; FX liquidity still exists but the usual 08:00 impulse may be missing.
  • Read the London session high/low against the prior day’s close and the Asia range. Continuation, gap-and-go, or fade are descriptions of location, not entries.
  • Check spread and average volume on your specific instrument at 08:05 versus 11:00. If the spread is 2 - 3 times mid-session, the open is not the same market.
  • Place risk first: stop distance in pips or ticks, position size from a calculator, and a hard invalidation if London’s high or low is taken. Indicators do not manage risk for you.

None of the above predicts a win. Session time only tells you when other participants are likely to be active. You still need structure, liquidity and a written invalidation. Trading involves risk of loss greater than your deposit if you use leverage.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the London session open and close?

Cash equities: 08:00 to 16:30 London time. FX and crypto traders usually mark 08:00 to 16:00 or 08:00 to 17:00 London time. Convert with GMT in winter and BST in summer so UTC and New York clocks stay correct.

Does the London session overlap New York?

Yes. The main overlap is 13:00 - 16:00 London (08:00 - 11:00 New York). That block typically holds the day’s highest FX volume. US data at 13:30 London falls inside it.

Which pairs move most in the London session?

EURUSD, GBPUSD, EURGBP, GBPJPY and gold usually show the largest London ranges. USDJPY more often waits for New York. Crypto majors add volume at the London open but remain 24-hour markets.

How do I draw the London session on TradingView?

Set the chart timezone to UTC or to London, then use session overlay or vertical lines at 08:00 and 16:00 local. Recheck after the March and October clock changes so the box does not drift by an hour.

Is London session trading the same every day?

No. UK bank holidays, BoE days, and thin August or late-December calendars cut volume. Always read that day’s economic calendar and the actual session high/low rather than a template range.

Can session indicators tell me when to buy or sell?

No. They mark time and, if you add them, session high/low. Entries, stops and size remain your rules. Trading involves risk; treat any overlay as decision support only.
