RSI indicators on TradingView measure the speed and persistence of price movement on a 0 to 100 scale. The standard 14-period RSI is useful for identifying momentum, pullbacks and possible exhaustion, but an overbought or oversold reading is not a standalone entry signal.

The practical approach is to read RSI in market context, then confirm it with price structure, trend, volume or a defined risk plan. This guide covers the settings and signals that matter without treating RSI as a prediction tool.

What the RSI measures

The Relative Strength Index compares the average size of recent upward closes with the average size of recent downward closes. It then converts that relationship into a reading between 0 and 100. A higher value means recent gains have had more force than recent losses. It does not mean price must immediately fall.

TradingView's built-in RSI normally uses a 14-bar length. On a five-minute chart, that calculation covers roughly 70 minutes of candles. On a daily chart, it covers 14 trading days. That difference matters when comparing settings across stocks, forex, crypto and futures.

Start with the default 14-period setting before changing it. A shorter length reacts faster but creates more fluctuations. A longer length is smoother but can delay a signal.

How to add and configure RSI in TradingView

  1. Open a TradingView chart and select Indicators from the top toolbar.

1. Centreline movement

The 50 level can help separate positive and negative momentum. RSI holding above 50 during pullbacks may support a bullish trend hypothesis. Repeated rejection below 50 may support a bearish one. Treat this as regime information, not a buy or sell command.

2. Overbought and oversold readings

In a range, a move above 70 followed by a return below it can show that upside momentum is fading. A move below 30 followed by a recovery above it can show that downside pressure is easing. In a strong trend, consider wider practical zones such as 80 and 20, or focus on whether RSI holds a trend-specific range.

3. Regular divergence

Regular bullish divergence occurs when price makes a lower low while RSI makes a higher low. Regular bearish divergence occurs when price makes a higher high while RSI makes a lower high. Divergence signals a difference in momentum, not a guaranteed reversal. Wait for price to break a relevant swing, trendline or market structure level before treating it as actionable analysis.

4. Hidden divergence

Hidden bullish divergence occurs when price makes a higher low while RSI makes a lower low. Hidden bearish divergence occurs when price makes a lower high while RSI makes a higher high. Traders often use this pattern as a continuation clue after a pullback, provided the broader trend and structure agree.

Combine RSI with price context

RSI becomes more useful when it answers a specific question. For example, market structure can establish whether the chart is making higher highs and higher lows. RSI can then show whether momentum is recovering during a pullback. VWAP can provide an intraday reference, while volume can help assess whether a move has participation behind it.

  • Trend setup: identify the higher-timeframe direction, wait for a pullback to a meaningful level, then check whether RSI recovers through 50 in the trend direction.
  • Range setup: mark clear support and resistance, then look for RSI exhaustion near the range edges rather than acting on every 30 or 70 reading.
  • Breakout setup: use structure to define the level and RSI to check momentum. A breakout with RSI already extended is not automatically invalid, but it may require more careful entry and stop placement.
  • Reversal setup: require several pieces of evidence, such as divergence, a failed continuation attempt and a confirmed break of a swing level.

Do not use RSI to override obvious price behaviour. An asset can stay overbought while trending higher, and it can remain oversold while selling continues. The indicator describes recent momentum; it does not remove market risk.

How to test an RSI method

Write the rules before reviewing historical charts. A basic test could define the market, timeframe, RSI length, entry condition, invalidation level, exit rule and position size. Test at least 50 to 100 clearly logged examples where practical, and separate trending, ranging and volatile periods.

Track more than the number of winning trades. Record maximum adverse movement, maximum favourable movement, losing streaks, time in the trade and whether the signal appeared before or after the key price level. Include spread, commission, slippage and realistic execution assumptions where they apply.
